Tyres
Tyres should be changed when they are 5yrs old. Unfortunately they probably won’t have much wear on them and it might appear to be wasteful to change them. I’ve had customers say to me, “but I’ve hardly used the van, why do the tyres need to be changed?” Tyre rubber is designed to be at its best operation when it is in use so when a caravan sits in one place and isn’t used the rubber perishes. I have seen tyres less than 5yrs old that are cracked and showing signs of degrading. There will be plenty of tread left on most tyres but if they are cracking it’s time to get them changed.
Tyre pressures can also play a large part in degrading your tyres, on the service we will set your tyre pressure to the manufacturers specification (as printed on the data plate at the bottom of the habitation door). All too often however we see tyres that have not been checked and the pressure can be 10 – 15psi down, we have even had one where the tyre pressure was half what it should be. Running on tyres that are not inflated correctly can cause uneven wear, and should you have an accident your insurance company may even invalidate your insurance if the tyre pressure is wrong.
